Climbing Dufton Pike

Trustee Jean Harvey has climbed Dufton Pike in Cumbria’s Eden Valley 20 times to raise funds for Cementing Futures.

Instead of climbing Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro, she decided to climb more than the equivalent of its height of 19,340 ft in this country and was supported in her climb by Soroptimists from Bournemouth and Penrith, their friends and families – aged between 72 and 4 – and three cairn terriers!  They raised the flag of Bangladesh each time they reached the summit.

Jean completed her 20 ascents (nearly 20,000 ft) in six days and has raised over £2,000 (including Gift Aid), all of which will go to the project.

The Cementing Futures team had a stall at this Bournemouth event which was great fun. The lollipop game had the children drooling and the winners went away with tiger toys, bangles, pencils and erasers.

For the chance takers we held a fruity pairs game where the participants had to remove a fruit from a box and match it with the one removed from another box by our volunteer.

We also had a tombola stall with winners on one in five of the 800 tickets sold. All prizes were donated by our supporters, which maximised our fund raising effort.

In total we raised £536.38p. Thank you to everyone for their support.

Recently we had an evening Dinner event at the very popular Bombay Palace, at:

286 Wimborne Road, opposite St Lukes Church, Bournemouth

Thanks to Mr Ahmed of the Bombay Palace in Winton, and to friends who supported this event, we raised £188.50 by simply enjoying an evening of good food and the company of friends and colleagues.

The event took take place on Monday 8 November 2010 and starts at 7.30 p.m.

The menu on offer included:

  • Poppadom with chutneys
  • Starters: choose from chicken tikka, onion bhaji or samosa (meat or vegetable)
  • Mains: choose from Chicken, Lamb, Vegetable or Prawn Madras, Dansak, Korma, Balti, Massala or Bhuna
  • Rice or Naan
  • Coffee

Proceeds from the evening went to the Cementing Futures charity.

Cementing Futures is a charity based in Bournemouth which is managed by members of Soroptimist International. All of the funds raised for Cementing Futures are being used to provide educational facilities for underprivileged children in the slum areas of Dhaka, which is the capitol city of Bangladesh.

The evening will include dance demonstrations and workshops by the award winning 'Cuba Salsa Sensation, Enrique |Perez and also Paul 'The Thing' Walker demonstrating South Coast Modern Jive.

Dance the night away to a fantastic selection of big band music provided by 'In the Pink' Big Band.  This will include a variety of classic big band dance numbers alongside the more modern latin and jazz to suit all tastes.

Cementing Futures would like to say a big Thank You to the Oxford Soroptimist club who held a fundraising event on our behalf at the award winning Aziz Restaurant, Cowley Road, Oxford.

Mr Aziz who already supports other educational projects in Bangladesh laid on an evening of traditional Bengali food. The evening was made more special by the entertainment provided by Bengali dancers.

Members of Cementing Futures gave a presentation at the event wearing authentic dress which added to the overall Asian feel of the evening.

Local Soroptimist members met up at the Forest Spice Restaurant in Pokesdown, Bournemouth for an evening of delicious Bangladeshi Food and a superb Sari Tying Demonstration' all in aid of “Cementing Futures”.

The staff at Forest Spice laid on an excellent array of dishes which were enjoyed by all, and Debbie volunteered to be the model. The evening raised £536 for the Cementing Futures Bangladesh School project.

Thank you to everybody who participated in an enjoyable and successful evening.
