Providing Education with the aim of beating poverty

Current School Facilities

See in the video above the school entrance whilst building work goes ahead.

The landlords often change the building or move the school to smaller rooms, in order to bring in other businesses and increase revenue. Since the 2007 visit, the landlord has halved room available to the school.

Current Projects

A New School in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Cementing Futures is working in partnership with Nijera Shikhi NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) in Bangladesh to provide a new school building in a poverty stricken area in Dhaka.

The main problem for the NGO’s is that all the ‘schooling’ is given in rented properties. There is no continuity to the site of their schools and they only have access to the buildings as dictated by the landlords. The buildings are often used for a host of other purposes, there are no storage facilities and the premises are often run down and in a dilapidated condition.

All this with a lack of proper monitoring hinders the quality of education, with no compulsion for street children to attend, causing a huge drop out rate and high levels of illiteracy in Bangladesh.

We aim to overcome obstacles in education by providing:

  • Educational facilities for schooling in slum areas
  • Textbooks, uniforms and ‘tiffen’ (a nutritional snack)
  • Active encouragement to keep sending children to school
  • Vocational skills alongside literacy and numeracy classes
  • Social and health education classes
  • Hygiene, family planning and parenting classes

Once built, the school will be self supporting as the building will include commercial shop units that will be rented to local businesses.
